Heading off on a Camping Trip? Why You Should Never Pack Your Car This Way

Sofia Curtis

With people finally on the move again, you may be thinking about gathering the family together and heading for a long-awaited holiday. If you'd like to avoid any crowded places at the moment and have decided to opt for a camping holiday instead, you have got to get all of your gear inside the vehicle as well as your eager family members, but how can you make the task of preparation and the journey itself a lot easier?

Assessing Your Needs

You may have a large family hatchback, and think that you can fit everyone and everything inside, but this may be a stretch, and you cannot leave any essentials behind, so you may be tempted to take shortcuts as you pack.

Bad Practice

Some people think that they can leave the hatchback door ajar and simply tie it to the bumper before they set off. This way they'll be able to get those awkward boxes inside along with anything else. This is never a good idea, however, as it will alter the balance of the car. You'll find that it will not drive properly as the open door will affect the aerodynamics. Also, fumes may be sucked back into the vehicle from the adjacent tailpipe, and this could cause drowsiness or other issues.

Better Solution

In this case, opt to fit a roof basket instead. You'll be able to transfer a lot of the lighter gear "upstairs", and this will give the family much more room to spread out as well, so everyone will arrive at the destination in good humour.

Adding the Roof Basket

When you add a roof basket, make sure that you read the manufacturer instructions correctly and fit it according to best practices. Then, pack the basket carefully with the heavier of the items in the centre and the lighter packages towards the sides. It's best if you keep the heaviest of items within the vehicle, as this will affect the centre of gravity and, once again, make the vehicle easier to steer.

Before You Depart

Always make sure that your roof basket is secure and that each item is appropriately tied down. Before you set off for your journey, drive around in your neighbourhood for a while to make sure that everything is correctly stowed before the big journey.

Finding Your Solution

Talk with your suppliers to make sure that you get the right roof basket for the make and model of your vehicle. They will answer any of your questions and help you prepare for your adventure.
